A better hiring process starts with a clearer brief

A useful hiring brief connects the role to business outcomes, distinguishes essentials from preferences, and gives candidates and interviewers a consistent picture of success.

01 · Context

Explain why the role exists now

Describe the business priority, team situation, and change this person should help create. Include who they will work with, the decisions they will influence, and what is difficult about the environment. This context helps recruiters and candidates understand the real job behind the title.

02 · Outcomes

Define what success should look like

Replace a long activity list with a small set of meaningful outcomes for the first months and the longer term. Outcomes make it easier to assess relevant evidence and reduce over-reliance on years of experience, familiar employers, or broad keyword matching.

03 · Criteria

Separate essentials from preferences

Identify the capabilities, knowledge, behaviours, location requirements, and working conditions that are genuinely necessary. Mark preferences honestly. An inflated list narrows the market unnecessarily and makes assessment inconsistent.

04 · Decision

Agree how evidence will be assessed

Choose interview stages, practical exercises, decision owners, and evidence for each criterion before candidates enter the process. Confirm compensation, work model, timing, and approval constraints early enough to avoid preventable delays.
